Their vision is to achieve sovereignty in coastal natural resource management based on the wisdom of the people of Wakatobi. Capacity building of communities is carried out to build a common understanding of sustainable natural resource management based on local knowledge to revitalise the customary area of Barata Kahedupa.

Partnership

Blue Ventures and FORKANI have worked collaboratively since 2016 to establish community based coastal management in Wakatobi with a focus on capacity building for the community of Darawa community in South Kaledupa. We are supporting other community based organisations (CBOs) in the Wakatobi archipelago (notably FONEB and KOMANANGi) to learn from these experiences in their evolving efforts in Binongko Island and Wangi-wangi Island (respectively). Some significant milestones in our partnership so far include the establishment of three temporary closures in Darawa. Activities have also taken place to enhance customary marine management institutions in partnership with national park government authorities to enable effective community based marine management

In the journey of our partnership, FORKANI began to implement health-environment approach by developing partnership with national primary health care institution (Puskesmas) in providing medical health check up for coastal communities. It also included health promotion on some basic issues: medicine, occupational health, nutrition, and family planning. FORKANI also strengthen the capacity of the traditional leaders of the customary area in regards to marine resource management, and develop customary regulations and a management plan for the customary area through consultations and workshops with national park stakeholders.
