Partnership

partnership

Blue Ventures and JARI have worked together since 2018 in West Nusa Tenggara Province. Our partnership intiated by piloting the management of octopus fisheries monitoring as an entry point for coastal communities in Labuhan Lombok and Poto Tano to learn about fisheries management. Together we have supported participatory octopus fisheries assessment in two communities in West Nusa Tenggara Province since October 2018, working towards a periodic closure in 2021. JARI conducted their first data feedback session with the community in Labuhan Lombok and Poto Tano in February 2020.

Highlights

highlights

Since August 2019, the community in Poto Tano Village have begun to understand the potential for octopus fisheries management. Supported by JARI organisation, Poto Tano community conduct participatory fisheries data collection, as a first step to be able to manage their octopus fisheries in a sustainable manner. The community started to put compressor diving with destructive fishing method behind. They turned to octopus fishers who use environmentally friendly fishing gear. They initiate ‘PELITA’ – octopus fishers group that implement sustainable fishing practices, to protect the octopus habitat.
