  • Yapeka is a non-profit organization that aims to establish community-based conservation efforts across Indonesia. Through the concept of ‘learning through nature’, Yapeka concentrates on building community awareness and developing education programmes to help communities sustainably manage their natural resources. Yapeka has a particular focus on rural areas in or around key biodiversity sites, such as marine protected areas (MPAs) and national parks. In 2019, Yapeka was named the best Environmental Civil Society Organization in Indonesia and in the same year, UN Habitat ranked YAPEKA’s Gili Island Solid Waste Management Project as one of the global top-20 innovative ways to transform waste.

Since June 2017, Yapeka and Blue Ventures have been working together, sharing ideas and approaches to community-based octopus fisheries monitoring and management in North Minahasa. Through participatory fisheries monitoring and community discussion, Yapeka and the fishing communities in Bulutui and Gangga Satu use the data to initiate fisheries management effort, such as implementing temporary fisheries closure (Home of Octopus/Rumah Boboca).

Yapeka has been working with communities in North Minahasa to implement temporary octopus fishery closures in the villages of Bulutui and Gangga Satu, which have now managed four temporary closures. For the fishers of Bulutui and Gangga Satu, the process of looking back at how their fishery had changed over the years and learning about responsible fishing techniques with YAPEKA, empowered them to take proactive steps in managing their resources and sustaining them for the future.
