Akar works with provincial and regency governments as well as communities themselves to strengthen their ability to manage their natural resources.

Blue Ventures and the AKAR Foundation started to work collaboratively in 2020 to establish community based coastal management in the Kaur Regency of the Bengkulu Province. Our initial focus is to support AKAR in their fisheries data monitoring, with a longer term aim to work towards a locally managed marine area (LMMA). This is Blue Ventures first partnership in western Indonesia.

AKAR is working with the fishing communities in Kaur, Bengkulu province to conduct participatory octopus fisheries monitoring since the beginning of 2020. They begin to build network and multi-stakeholder coordination with regional government to advocate for community-based marine management in Bengkulu province that incorporate in the 5 years Provincial Development plan. Akar also works closely with Village Level government to incorporate community led fisheries management into village development plan.
