FONEB (Binongko Fishers Forum) is a community-based organisation serving the fishing community of Binongko Island in Southeast Sulawesi, part of Wakatobi National Park. FONEB was established in 2005 as an alliance of several community groups, and works to protect, conserve, and use natural resources sustainably according to local customs through monitoring, surveillance, and management of coastal areas.

Blue Ventures and FORKANI have supported FONEB since 2017 to establish community based marine management on Binongko island, drawing on the experiences of community led fisheries closures in other areas of the Wakatobi archipelago.

FONEB is working with the fishing communities in Wali, Wakatobi, to conduct participatory octopus fisheries monitoring since 2018. Through the data collected, the relevant stakeholders have been engaged to design the island’s first temporary fishery closure in Wali, Wakatobi.
