KOMANANGI stands for Fishers Community. This community-based organisation serves the fishing community of Wangi-wangi Island, Southeast Sulawesi – the biggest island in Wakatobi National Park area. KOMANANGI works to protect, conserve, and use natural resources sustainably according to local customs through monitoring, surveillance, and management of coastal areas.

Blue Ventures and FORKANI have supported Komanangi since 2017 to establish community based marine management in the communities it serves. This has included the piloting of octopus fisheries management as a pathway to longer term community based marine management with the community in Kapota, South Wangi-wangi, Wakatobi.

Komanangi is working with the fishing communities in Kapota, to conduct participatory octopus fisheries monitoring since 2018. Through the data collected, the relevant stakeholders have been engaged to design the island’s first temporary fishery closure in Kapota, South Wangi-wangi, Wakatobi.
