LINI

Profile

profile

LINI works to develop and implement marine conservation and community development projects, including an aquaculture training centre for sustainable capture of the endangered Banggai Cardinalfish in North Bali and Banggai Island (Central Sulawesi). LINI also supports reef restoration initiatives, and develops fisheries improvement projects for the traditional yellowfin tuna fisheries in the Banda Sea (Central Mollucas). LINI’s mission is to work with marginalised coastal communities to reverse the degradation of Indonesian coral reefs and raise awareness about responsible and sustainable marine resource use.

Partnership

partnership

Blue Ventures and LINI have worked collaboratively since 2016 to establish community based coastal management in Banggai laut with a focus on community-led fisheries management and strengthening governance by the community in Banggai Utara district. Together we are working to support the community towards implementing community based marine management. This will be progressed through the development and ratification of village-level regulations and governance systems to establish and manage community based marine management within the district.

Highlights

highlights

During the journey of our partnership, LINI managed to initiate and nurture local community organisation named Yayasan KALI in Banggai Laut. Together with KALI and the local government, the community has been monitoring their octopus catch in a participatory way, and initiated fisher groups to commit to responsible fishing practices. They implemented a periodic temporary closure of fishing areas to ensure the sustainability and increase of octopus catch. In 2019, the communities and local government officially signed a new resource management plan for the coastal areas and small islands in the North Banggai District, including periodic octopus fishery closures, no-take zones, and tourism and aquaculture areas. We also build strategic partnership with LINI to communicate with the Indonesia government to demonstrate the efficacy of our work supporting community-led fisheries management across Indonesia, so that octopus is recognised as a priority strategic species to manage under national plans.
