Oikos has been permanently represented in Mozambique since 1990, when a Cooperation Protocol was signed with the Mozambican Government. There are several provinces where it has been active since then, particularly in Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Nampula, Maputo and Gaza. Oikos’ priorities for action in Mozambique include rural development and food security, training of community development agents, capacity building of community organizations, institutional strengthening of local authorities, rehabilitation of local infrastructure and resettlement of displaced populations.

Oikos and BV have been working together since early 2020 to further community-based marine conservation and fisheries management by supporting CCPs (Conselho comunitario de Pesca/ community fishing councils) in Mossuril and Ilha de Moçambique in Nampula province. We support CCPs by providing training in management and governance, and by supporting the establishment of temporary closures.

Oikos and BV have (1) trainined 14 members of Mossuril and Ilha de Moçambique CCPs on fisheries governance and conflict management; (2) trained 8 activistas on mobile catch monitoring that is still ongoing; (3) procured a boat and office for the CCP to help on patrolling the closures and a place where the CCP and other fisheries stakeholders discuss issues regarding fisheries management; and (4) established three temporary closures (Chocas Mar, Cabaceira Pequena and São joão). Chocas Mar is currently about to open. Recently trained Mossuril CCP on financial management.
